I don't like to be seen on AIM, but like to keep it open in case family needs to talk to me. Is it ok to block friends just sometimes when I only want to talk to family?

Yes - most people don't care / notice. There are some programs out there that allow people to see if you are truly online, but your friends should respect your privacy when you want it.
All I can say is the block function was invented for a reason, so do make use of it.

uh well, if they have more than one account and their accounts are linked (they can have two screen names on at the same time) then one screen name (the one u block) will not see u and the other will see you.
What i suggest, is make another screen name, don't tell ur friends about it. Then link it with your screen name u have now. That way, ur family can contact u on one screen name and ur friends can contact u on the other.
To do this just make another screen name and go to like manage linked screen names then add then type in ur new screen name and blah blah blah.

if u don't want to talk to ur friends, it's more polite to say, "ctn" instead of blocking them b/c if they find out they'll take it personally.

You can change the settings to only allow certain people. If you block someone and they go on a different screen name and see you on they'll know you blocked them.
In preferences you go to privacy and then only allow the people on the list, then just add your family to the list.

no it will look for them as if your offline. But if they have an other username they can add u on that to check if you blocked them
