You need great vision, the ability to read blocks and pick out which hole to go into. This is something you build with practice with a team and running plays.
You need speed. Quick speed. Run 40 yard sprints, parachute drills, cone drills, and even gasers.
You need core strength. Lower body is key to breaking tackles, cutting up field, blocking, and running hard. Upper body is key for ball handling, blocking, and breaking tackles. Lift weights. Bench press, squats, dead lifts, hang cleans, and curls are just a few.
You need hands. RB's are very vital in the passing game. Wether its blocking or catching. Trust me, in high school the RB will catch a lot of passes.

It helps if you know your strengths and weakness as a back. For instance, can you take hit? Are your best running between the line or along the outside? Can you block?
Keep in mind; professional running backs have the shortest career of any player on the field, because they take or dish out solid hits on just about every play, whether they are blocking or carrying the ball.
Regardless to how much strength you have, certain amount of speed helps, but you don't have to have break away either. I used to work out with lineman as well which improved my pass protection skills. Work on your footwork and believe it or not cutting drills that soccer players do can prove useful when your are one on one with a LB or DB.

I'm a running back and average 100 yds per game, and longest run was 82 yards!
I'll tell you, you need strength. Weights will help that. You need speed. That is hard to work on, but doing 40 yd sprints helps to improve it for your conditioning. Last, you need to able to protect the ball. Just practice someone trying to strip the ball while your running. Eventually youll perfect that.
Good Luck.

It depends if your a full back or a halfback. If your a half back you need to have great speed. You have to great upper body and strength to break tackles. So really there is only one answer just work-out and do vertical plyometrics for explosiveness and to have strength
