It does hurt a little. I had one with my second and third. I pushed for 2 1/2 hours with my first and they had to deliver him by forceps. My second and third (each bigger then my first) I pushed 4 times for. For me I could really relax with the epidural, I did not have to think about breathing etc. I hate hate hate needles but would never go through child birth without one. They use to perform dental work without drug too. Thank God they do not do that any more.

If you are in labor it is not so bad. They do put some kind of numbing thing on the your back before they put the epidural in.
I had five children: 3 without epidurals and the last two with epidurals. Epidurals are the way to go if you don't like pain. Hopefully the doctor giving it to you can get the right spot because sometimes it only takes on one side so they have to come back in and fix it but hopefully by that time you are having the baby.
Good Luck!!

It hurts, more like burns.
Imagine a branding iron touching bare skin - and that's what it feels like...
But only for a moment, because the pain medication kicks in fast and then you will be in more relief than ever before.
I had an epidural, and even though it really hurt for a moment or two - I will opt for it again any time over labor pains!!!

When I got my epidural I was at the peak of the contraction..so it didn't hurt as much as the contraction! It felt like when someone pinches you with their nails...or kinda like a bee sting. It's really not that bad because as they insert the needle it's releasing a numbing medication so once the initial "pinch" or "bee sting" type pain is over (the pain lasted for like a nano second..it was nothing) you won't feel anything.

You're given a local before they insert the needle for the epidural. It's uncomfortable, and you might feel some pinching, but it wasn't too bad - at least from my perspective.
Other's may have had entirely different experiences than I did.

Why don't you wait until you see if you can manage without one? Make the decision after you can see if you can cope without one.
Not everyone needs one and they do carry risks for you and for the baby, especially if you get one very early in labor. If you are not already at leat 5 cm dialted, getting an epidural can slow or halt your progress, resulting in a c-section.
Also, women who get epidurals can't push as effectively oftentimes and end up needing vacuum extraction or forceps delivery, which also carry risks for you and the baby.

With everything going on, I don't think you will remember how it feels going in, but you'll remember the pain relief effects. It just takes a few seconds and is definitely worth it. I have had three and the last one I had was perfect and I felt nothing.

it's no big deal. people make it sound worse than it is so don't worry about it. I had it done and it didn't hurt as bad as I thought but you need to have somebody drive you when you done with it as they won't let you drive after having an epidural.

Its really not as bad as it sounds.......for sure you feel a pin prick when the needle goes in and it feels like they inject a cold liquide in your spine.....bad its not that bad.....and its well worth it, because once it takes effect you can really site back and relax, talk, laugh, play cards....whatever ! I dont think you'll regret it......so dont be scared, besides its better for your baby and you if your relaxed and enjoying the birth
