Can you carry twins or multiples and not know it??

Question

My doctor listened to the heartbeat a few days ago. It was loud. Then he told me in a month, he will schedule me for an ultrasound. Then he said, from their I will find out whether if I'm a boy or girl (if the baby cooperates), then he said and we will also find out if you are having twins or multiples. I was surprise he said cause, wouldn't he able to tell from listening to the heartbeat? Please, any twin mothers answer my question. Did any of you listen to the heartbeat and only heard one and then ultrasound confirmed you are carrying more than one???????

Women who are pregnant with multiples usually have a higher level of hCG in their urine and measure (especially by 17 weeks) larger than average. I would imagine that if you were carrying multiples it would have been discovered before now, but occasionally I've heard stories about people who didn't find out until late. I've never known one personally, and it's even more rare these days as most doctors do an intial ultrasound early in pregnancy to date the pregnancy or get a more accurate due date.

No I heard two distinct heartbeats. If you are 17 weeks you would know by now. You would be measuring way ahead of 17 weeks. You would aready look 6 or 7 months pregnant or have gained way more then 15lbs. You would be able to hear 2 heartbeats when the Dr uses a doppler. I found out at 6 weeks it was twins. And Now I am 32 weeks measuring 44 weeks and gained 60 some lbs already. But really only a Dr or U/S can tell.

Yes!!! I did not find out I was having twins until I was more than 20 weeks along. I was measured at my 16wk appointment and was not large enough at that time to think anything was unusual. At my 20 week appt the Dr. said that I was measuring big and that an ultrasound was needed to confirm the due date or that I could be carrying multiples. When I asked about hearing a second heartbeat, he said that without suspecting that it was a multiples pregnancy he had not been looking for a second heartbeat, and so did not find one.

sometimes this can be tricky to tell because of the mothers heartbeat as well. its kinda hard to distinquish more than two sounds at the same time. the lub dub can be mistaken as two heartbeats sometimes when in fact its only one. the ultrasound is more reliable in determining multiple births than sound of heartbeats.

My aunt had twins but she found out during the ultrasound.

I am a twin and it wasn't until my mom went into the hospital 2 weeks before for her last check up did they tell her that she was having twins...not only that but she was having twin girls...they were planning for one boy. Imagine the shock of my parents...needless to say we grew up tomboys cause everything was blue and green...i'm kidding, but we were tomboys, we hunt, fish, and got as dirty as the boys in the neighborhood. Really, twins are a blessing. It means that God trusts you enough that He wanted to double your 'pay'!!! Good Luck and Congratulations!
