Kelly Builds 3 legged stools and 4 legged tables. Last month she used 72 legs to build 3 more stools than tables. How many stools and tables did she make?



I have the answer using pictures but i have to use equations as showing my work! How do i make that into an Equation??

3x + 4y= 72

x = y + 3


where X = number of stools and Y= tables


3(y+3) +4 (y) = 72 (substitution for x)

3y +9 +4y =72 (simplifying)

7y= 72-9 (more simplyfing)

7y= 63

y=9 tables insert into orig. equation

x= 9+3

x= 12 stools ta da.....!

72-3x3=63
63/7 for each one stool and table=9

Kelly built 9 tables and 12 stools

check: 9x4=36 legs
12x3=36
36+36=72 legs

3x+4y=72 and y=x-3 its a system of equations let x mean stools & y mean tables
