Forget all the billy-goat, nanny-goat jokes (heard them all), or even HERD them all - & the rest!) I can understand why youngsters say Mum & Dad (i'ts the 1st sounds they can make) but why do we call them kids?

it's just a saying that parents use my grandma used to say it about my mum and my mum uses the saying on us and now my sister says it about her daughter. i believe it's a saying that will never die it will just go through the generations.

I used to ask the same question when I was younger. Hearing that word in reference to children annoyed the heck out of me at one time.

But then I started learning about semantics and semasiology and just let I go. Hell, I use the term myself now!

I don't know why only I did and now they are grown up I say adult children and I'm a Nannie, well that's how I spell it and you can also get cards with Nannie on them.

i dont really like the word kid..i prefer to say children,it sounds much nicer saying "how are the children" then hows the kids"
i have used the word "kid" now and again..mostly when typing but prefer "children" much more...dont know why??

For the same reason that short opposes both long ("short walk") and tall ("short girl"): English is a weird language.

You are right.

I correct them all the time.

But there are times when the word "kids" is appropriate to use.
