My Camry 1997 makes sound when I turn my steering wheel left or right. The mechanic said that my rack is leakong and there is air inside. Is it safe to drive the car in this condition? How long??

I wouldnt recomend driving it long distances and i really would not wait very long to repair the rack & pinion. there are many remanufactured rack and pinions out there to be bought at a decent price. Check with a local auto part store such as Auto Zone , or go to AutoZone.com and you can look up your car and get the price on a remanufactured rack and pinion. Once you ge tthe part you can have a local repair garage replace the unit in usually about 2-3 hours worth of work. You shopuld be as good as new from there.
Yopur current rack has worn oil seals and the air replaces the oils once it leaks out. This will wear away at the worm gear and eventually you will have more and more difficulty in steering your car.
good luck........
