we have two computers in our home but only one cable modem. Are we able to use an ethernet switch to connect both computers to the internet?

it depends on the modem but safest bet is to get a router.

A switch will allow all the devices to communicate with each other but chances are the modem won't be smart enough to know to let everyone out on to the internet at once.

The router will take care of that for you. The router will let you split your single internet connection and share it between more than one computer.

If your modem has a built-in router you can use a switch.

Never use hubs... hubs are evil.

Yes, but do you really mean a router? (A switch is somewhat different than a router. Does a switch to NAT? If not, then you must have a router.)

A hub will NOT provide the functionality that a router does for you.

The modem plugs into the router's WAN port, then each computer plugs into the router's LAN ports.
