Relative to the needs of a more and more technological world, it would seem there have been less of us on average that can handle or fulfill these increased responsibilities.

We've not gotten any dumber in the past 10 years. They're are just not as many people out there that show their smarts. Just like when Galilo was faced with the callenge of going aginist the church many people nowadays are faced with the callenge of comfronting the goverment.

the information age isn't, most of what is published is more cursory, less in depth. People have less deductive reasoning because they are told everything now without having to figure it out press a button get an answer. but so much is lost when you don't have to struggle for the answer or deduce it from a series of facts. TV has strangled thought and deduction most mysteries show you the crime and the criminal right off so you don't even have to think about it. Reading real books is out of fashion. that's how government and business want us docile and ignorant enough the believe what they tell us without question.

If you look at test scores supposedly not , yet other stats say that reading comprehension, writing ability and math skills have declined. I know spelling and grammar have by some of the posts here.

I blame the whole language approach in language arts in the late 80s for much of it and I also think teachers now teach to the tests rather than the curriculum because boards and parents want those top grades rather than kids who can actually think critically, write well, understand math and comprehend what they read.

I think so. People do not seem to have the respect for education they once had. The American society is by far one of the least in academics then the Asians or French. This is fact shown by test scores. Children today would rather be playing a video game, and vegging in front of the TV or computer then reading a book.
Yes, our children's brains are being fried, and no one seems to care.

Most of them, but it started more than 10 years ago. The dumbing down of America can most correctly be linked to the mass forced-schooling movement that began in earnest after the Civil War. Read John Taylor Gatto's "The Underground History of American Education" (free online). I think you will concur. It was positively shocking the first time I read it.

I think no man should use the term dumb, for basically, no man is concsidered dumb. we may say that some people may tend to be more intelligent that us buut that doesn't mean of dumbness, that is just a matter of developing the human brain, and which varies. we may say that many of us has the sufficient food intake but ofm which others don't have. there are so amny factors we need to look at in dealing with such kind of querry. you just need to understand the changes that wnt on through these years.

Well here in the U.S. the illiterate rate has risen really high. The U.S. has never had such a bad rate of illiterate Americans.
But on the other hand the school kids are learning the moderne technology at an earlier age.

i think so. I don't think people embrace the opportunities as much as they could. We still have a major unemployement rate in this country mainly because people are uneducated. And they don't try to raise their standards to college or university. Just high school, at least they'll find a minimum wage job! Living in a country like this people are still lazy and let their ethnic prejudices put them down and not want to achieve higher than the person before them.

its not so much that people have gotten dumber, its just that the gap between those of intelligence and those of lesser intelligence is more pronounced now than it was in the past. this just makes the slower people stand out more than they did in the past.

I think they have. Nowadays our students seem to be so into partying and having fun that they barely study. Of course there are also those who will study religiously, and it is a good thing. I blame on the television, because of all the mindless reality shows and other stupid programming that keep people on the couch instead of going out and doing important and worthwhile things.
