I have to do an informative speech for a speech class in college and can't think of a good topic. Students in our class are mostly in their 20s and 30s and its a close group as you might say. Please give me suggestions that fits with a 20 year-old guy.

" ... informative speeches show, clarify, and inform. To give the audience the information they've come for, you need to learn how to focus on a topic, decide on an effective method of organization, and include sufficient details, examples, and facts. Always start with the topic."

I've always found the Army technique effective: Tell 'em what you're going to tell them; tell them; then tell them what you told them. It worked particularly well for me when I was teaching technical how-to-do-it classes.

I've heard a lot of "informative speeches" in my time. Probably the one that stuck with me the best was a talk on "How to Buy a Used Car". That can be an interesting talk - is it best to buy from an individual, a used car dealer, or a new car dealer? Why? How do you get an idea of what you should pay for the car? What should you check on the car itself? When is it worthwhile to pay a mechanic to go over the car before buying it? And there is a lot more.

If you don't like that topic, I suggest you pick something you are interested in and know a lot about. Your speech will be better and you'll be able to handle questions with confidence.

Well, first off Dwayne,.. you only have to post your question once. You will short change yourself on answers if you post it twice.

Second.. informative in a humorous way or in a serious:

Humor:

1) The 10 best things about beer in college
2) Places I never went but had fun there anyway
3) Great Sex at $10 a night or How I earned $30 per month in my spare time.

Serious

1) The Draft (should it return)
2) The war in the middle east.. whos turn is it now?
3) The 10 best things about beer in college

.

A few topics to consider:

1) Hybrid technology applied to make ecological/efficient cars vs. it's application to make cars faster/sportier. (e.g. Toyota Prius vs. Honda Accord Hybrid)

2) HPV vaccine - why it is targeted at women & why the virus is so hard to detect in men.

3) What kinds of fats/oils are companies using in baked goods & snack foods now instead of hydrogenated oils w/ trans-fats? Are they better for us or are the risks just different/more well understood? If so, how? If not, why not?
