First, get involved in local community theater. Build up a bit of experience.

If you can afford it, take lessons. If not, look online for some books on acting technique.

Find publications that list local auditions. The first roles you get (if you get any at all) will probably be for industrial films or independent film-makers. These will pay next to nothing, but are good to put on a resume to show that you have some experience.

Get an agent. You will also need to get head shots (photos of your face, preferably in a few different poses) so your agent can send these around to casting directors.

All of this (books, lessons, photos, time taken off work to go to auditions) will cost some money. Be prepared to struggle for a few years.

Do you want to be an actress, or do you want to be famous? Do you just want the publicity and glamor, or are you willing to put in years of hard work and crap pay? A million people want to be actors/actresses. Very very few make a living from it.

You know how many prospective actors it takes to change a light bulb? One to change the bulb, and 100 to stand around and say, "Hey, I could have done that!"

As I said, if you're prepared to work hard for lousy pay, you can be an actress. If this really is your dream, pursue it with all your effort.

Good luck.

Take acting classes for the next 10 to 12 years. If you are in college, major in theatre.

Perform in as much theatre productions as you can. Get involved with the Community Theatre and perform as frequently as possible.

After college, go to graduate school and get a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre. An MFA will look great on your resume, especially if you want to perform in New York City.
