Is this excessive? Autozone says they will charge me $278 for the part. The repair guy says that it is a low end part and he won't use it. What is the truth? Mitsubishi Eclipse 1993

with the ECU only replace with the manufacturers unit, after market ones are not as good and will leave you with reduced performance and higher gas use - $502 is cheap for an ECU

Repair shops generally won't let you use your parts unless they eliminate their guarantee. In other words they won't cover labor should the part you bought and supplied, if the part fails. I'd recommend shopping around if you know what is wrong with the car. As for the mechanic saying it is a low end part, you could tell him the vehicle is about 14 years old and you aren't looking to keep it on the road forever, just trying to squeeze a year or two out of it.

The repair guy should put whatever part into the vehicle that you provide to him,,,,as long as it does not compromise safety.
He just wants the markup on his own part is all.
besides,,,remounting a computer on a car is usualy a job i'd do myself anyhow.

I replaced one in a 94 and it was over $2400. Consider yourself lucky. Although you might want to just get rid of that car all together and get something less disposable.
