Is there a way to bypass it, and/or restore my computer to its initial state?

start in safe mode (press f8 on boot). search for password file. it's extender is .pwl so do a search for *.pwl to find the password file(s). change the password file extender to .pw_ and reboot... this will 'disable' that password file because it's no longer a valid password file but you still have it in case you remember the password and want to rename it back to it's original name...
you should be able to get in now...

In Windows 98, pressing the Escape key at logon should allow you to get into the computer. You should then be able to change the password by entering the control panel and Users.

You should be able to log in in safe mode (press F8 during boot up) and then search for username.pwl. Delete the file(s) and you should then be able to log in and create a new password.

Try just hitting enter when it comes to the password screen.
