The invention of fire is generally regarded as the most important.

It is still used today.

It enables mankind to stay warm, cook food, and create weapons to wage war much more efficiently than with rocks and sticks.

Fire. Most inventions in this modern day would not work without a source of outside power and that comes from power plants which still require heat to generate that power. Ah, but you argue cell phones have batteries! Takes energy to make a battery. And what if those transceivers on the cell phone towers go dead because the power fails or the tower comes down (just like what happened on 9/11)? True, there are hydroelectric, atomic and wind generators, but alas, most of our energy still comes from burning coal, and remember it takes smelting (fire) to make the metal that makes those generators...............you get the idea. No fire and you would freeze to death so you would never be able to cultivate the land come spring. Besides, before agriculture there were hunter/gatherers living off the land and fire kept them alive to do so. Native Americans are the prime example. Though fire may be "natural", learning how to start it and control it is not and so that was the key to it's use.

Good question. There are so many good inventions that I really can't pin point just "1". Everthing that was invented is extreamly important to our survival. No matter how big or small we owe these inventors a lot. So Yeah I don't think it would be fair to just say one invention is better than the other.

The wheel and the lever. Not much could have been invented without the wheel. Fire wasn't invented, it is naturally occuring. Firearms are also very important and useful.
