I already went to the doctor and she prescribed one pill of fluconazole. I am now on my 4th day and haven't seen any improvement. My inner thighs are red, puffy and itchy. I tried using anti-itch cream but it seems like I have to re-apply every 2 hours. I also started taking acidophilus two days ago thinking it would help right away. What else can I do?? I'm in sooo much pain and I can't sleep at night.
(I am allergic to Monistat so I can't use any of their products).

If you have a rash involving your inner thighs, then you have more than just a vaginal yeast infection. You should have seen some improvement by now if the single fluconazole tablet were going to work.

Stop the anti-itch cream IMMEDIATELY if it is a steroid cream, such as hydrocortisone. You most likely have a fungal infection. It could be yeast (a yeast is a fungus) or it could be jock itch (called tinea cruris, caused by a different fungus), which is essentially ringworm, just located in the groin area. Steroid anti-itch creams make these infections worse, because they depress the local immune response, allowing the fungus/yeast to proliferate even faster.

I think that based on your description, it's more likely that you have tinea cruris. You may wind up needing more oral antifungals (such as a longer course of fluconazole), but only your physician can decide.

As for immediate help, you can go to the drugstore and get some antifungal cream, such as lotrimin. It may take a couple of days, but it should begin to help clear up the rash. Keep the area as dry as possible (wear loose-fitting clothing, consider not wearing panties for a couple of days), and you can use baby powder as well. Whether it's yeast or tinea, both love warm, moist environments.

If you want my best advice, I'd say go back to your doctor. The over-the-counter lotrimin may not be strong enough, and you'll need a prescription for a stronger cream or an oral course of antifungals.

p.s. Sometimes you can find creams that are combinations of anti-fungals and steroids. There is a version of lotrimin like this, and it's called lotrisone. It's generally acceptable to use these combinations, because the fungus will not proliferate in this case, since there is an antifungal chemical present. These creams may offer relief sooner than plain lotrimin, since the steroid portion will help with the itch.

Good luck!

Hello, I'm on the second week and seeing definite improvement on my yeast infection symptoms:

Note that: If the yeast infection doesn't respond to over the counter treatment, prescription medication will likely be necessary. Similarly, if the symptoms return after two months of being treated, you should contact the doctor for professional treatment rather than resorting again to home treatment.

If this is the first time you have experienced a yeast infection, you should schedule an appointment to have the condition treated by a doctor instead of resorting to home treatment

Try taking a bath as often as you can. Drink lots of water. I have a friend who took that pill and it did nothing for her. I recommended that she tried a natural remedy. Pomegranate juice, cranberry juice and unsweetened grapefruit juice.

I know how you feel, but i do not take any medications when i get yeast infections i get very itchy. I have learned not to itch back, because it causes bruises redness and puffiness. The baths help with the itching and the other things that i have mentioned help to take it away. Oh yogurt daily helps to prevent it and lots of water. Hope I helped.

you said you're taking acidophilus which is good, yogurt always works for me. I would eat some and rub some unflavored on the affected area, thighs and everywhere.

you may still have it. Go see your doctor again or try a cream (ask your pharmacist)
