How old is the house? I once heard tapping in my walls and it turned out to be mice in between the lathe. This happens especially in the winter.

I heard a similar noise years ago. I went out with a flashlight and noticed there was a small branch that fell from a tree and landed on the roof, but was laying across the phone line. As the wind blew, the branch and wire would move and make a tapping sound.

Have a look at the leaves in detail. If they are neatly folded and soft, you may have a case of "Chinese laundry moths" These feed on mainly starch, and relish there "Comfort" to keep them in good condition. These creatures normally breed around our human elderly, evidence can be seen in the centre of tables or on top of the telly, look for fabric mats with uniformed holes eaten in them. They are rarely found in student accommodation, due to the lack of silence in between the wall cavity`s.

Could be rats, squirrels, or mice within the cavity wall, check for signs of droppings or an area where they may enter the building ! If so call local pest exterminator and seal up any access holes.

Roof rats! I just had the same problem. Poison and traps took care of them. Ours would wake us up at 3:25am every morning. We took action. A few nights of pounding on the ceiling was enough. We killed them..

Interesting........have you tried being in the room when she says the sound is happening? That probably would make it easier. Where is her room located? My basement room has water pipes and no matter where the water is running you hear it in that room. Pipes knock and creak. As long as it's not too loud I would just tell her it's nothing. Of course if she believes in ghosts you might not be able to concvince her!!!!!!

Must be a squirrel, the leaves would suggest it is building its nest there.
