I remember watching a documentary on him.
It wasn't real bullets it was a malfunction in the prop gun and it's alleged it happened in the scene when he is jumping over the roofs in a bid to escape the baddies.

There is a bit that is pretty chilling as you can tell the actual point he is shot.

Just after he jumps the roof, you can here a cry out and it looks like he falls..they didn't edit it out apparently and he dies shortly after.

They had filmed the ending at an earlier time and had a stand in complete other parts at a distance or angle you couldn't see his face.

What a sad day when he died after the tragic death of his father also at a young age.

A scene required a gun to be loaded, cocked, and then pointed at the camera. Because of the close-range of the shot, the bullets loaded had real brass caps, but no powder. After the cut, the props master (not the arms master - he had left the set for the day) dry-fired the gun to get the c*ck off, accidently knocking an empty cartridge into the barrel of the gun. The next scene to be filmed involving that gun was the rape of Shelly. The gun was loaded with blanks (which usually contain double or triple the powder of a normal bullet to make a loud noise). Lee entered the set carrying a bag of groceries containing an explosive blood pack. The script called for Funboy (Michael Massee) to shoot Eric Draven (Lee) as he entered the room, triggering the blood pack. The dummy cartridge that was still stuck in the barrel was propelled forward by the blank bullet with firing powder. The dummy bullet went through Lee's bag taht he was carrying, killing him.

Dummy bullets, used for close-up shots of guns, were loaded into the .44 Magnum revolver that the character "Funboy" used to shoot his character. Dummies look exactly like real bullets, except there's nothing in the cartridges.

When the close-ups were done, they emptied the revolver to replace them with blanks, which have no tips (the actual bullet that gets ejected from the gun to strike whatever the target is.) Blanks are loaded with just enough gunpowder to create the "pop" or "bang" noise associated with a gun being shot, but nothing is ejected out of the gun except the expelled cartridge containing the gunpowder.

It was later determined that when the gun was emptied of the dummies, one of the tips had dislodged from its cartridge, remaining behind in the revolver. When they went to fire the "blank" shots to shoot the scene, the dummy tip is what struck him. No one immediately knew he was in trouble, because he was supposed to be acting like he was shot. Then the director spotted blood all over his shirt and hands. Even after surgery, he died about 13 hours later. The bullet had stopped near his spine.

My husband bought a book that was written by a guy that was on set during filming and this is what he said happened: during filming, when the gun was loaded, one of the blanks that was made by an off set company wasn't actually a blank (they accidentally left some gun powder in the shell) so when he was shot, he was really shot and fell backwards through the round window and died.

It wasnt a real bullet in place of a blank. It was a fragment of the gun that flew out of the barrel and shot him. They made the rest of the movie using CGI in place of Brandon.

It was supposed to be the curse that his father incurred after bringing Wing Chun to the masses through cinema and tutoring non-chinese people.

Personally, I think someone decided that was true and that Brandon Lee had to die. So they loaded the gun with real bullets instead of rubber blanks.

Either way, thats how he died.

A prop gun wasn't cleaned properly. A projectile shot out and hit him in the stomach. He bled to death at the hospital. Sad day when that happened.

When he was on the table fighting and got shot, there was a real bullet in the gun rather than a dummy. And he died. I think thats the true story.
