This might be a little different from most of the suggestions, but if you enjoy fantasy (and some magic), you might look into Piers Anthony's Xanth series. It takes place in a land that looks like Florida (the author's home state) and is full of colorful characters and puns.

And if you enjoy dragons, you might look at Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series. These were written way before Eragon. A group of people wreck on the planet Pern - and they basically have to start over. A threat to their existence is called "thread" - it falls from the skies and destroys whatever it touches. Some of the Pernese "impress" the native dragons on the planet and use them to fight thread. Some of the books also go into other planet life - dolphins and fire lizards, and the trades learned by those that don't become dragonriders.

I read all of the Unfortunate Events series - have had a few of the others for sale (I sell on-line now), but I haven't had the opportunity to read them yet.

I concur with Ecthelion...almost completely.

I currently have four of the books he recommended (all three "Lord of the Rings" volumes and "The Hobbit") sitting on my desk and have read them all multiple times. If you haven't read Tolkien, don't hesitate to go find a copy of "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" or "The Hobbit". "The Hobbit" is a much easier read, but I don't like it as much. The presentation and handling of the material is much different. "Lord of the Rings", my personal favorite book, takes time and effort, but it's worth it. You don't have to read "The Hobbit" first, but you'll understand more of "Lord of the Rings" as you read more of Tolkien's works. The Silmarillion is really confusing, so I'd definitely hold off on that until you know if you like the Middle Earth tales or not. And the movies, although they were good, are N-O-T-H-I-N-G compared to the books.

P.S. I know where you're at...I'm a tenth grader. I read the Spiderwick books...oh, it must be two years ago, and read a few of the "Series of Unfortunate Events" when I was younger.

Try The Belgariad, a series of five books by David Eddings, although he later admits his wife Leigh did half the writing. If you like those, there is a five book followup series called, The Mallorean. Then three stand alones; Belgarath, Polgara, and The Rivan Codex.

I hope you like them, all three of my children enjoyed them as much as I did.

Additionally, you may find the Xanth series, by Piers Anthony, a lighthearted addition to your list. Be warned, however, there are more than twenty books in this series so far.

I love A Series of Unfortunate Events. Have you ever heard of a mystery series by Christopher Golden and Rick Hautala-a series of books based on a girl who solves mysteries. The name of the series is a body of evidence. It would be found in the teensection.

The Goremenghast trilogy by Mervyn Peake. The first two books, "Titus Groan" and "Goremenghast," were televised by BBC a few years ago with Jonathyn Rhys Somebody as Steerpike. You may be disappointed by the third book, "Titus Alone." Peake tried also to finish the trilogy with a short story, "Boy in Darkness." They're available in cheap paperbacks.

9th grade? umm...the Tolkien works would be perfect for you. In high school I loved those and am still reading. Start with the Hobbit and work your way through the trilogy afterwards. Then you have the Silmarillion and lost tales etc.

The vampire chronicles are pretty interesting. and if all else fails

umm... Harry Potter?
