In Texas, a child does not “divorce” the parents. For a minor to live separately from the parents and have the right to contract-meaning buy cars and rent apartments-the child must go through a court procedure called Removal of Disabilities of a Minor. The law requires that the child requesting Removal of Disabilities of a Minor by the court show: 1) that the minor is at least 16 years old, living separate from the parents, and, 2) the minor is self-supporting and managing their own affairs. Texas Family Code section 31.001.

I'm from texas, so I know. no, you cannot technically "divorce" your parents in texas, but you can however call the child protective services if there is a problem, such as physical, mental, or sexutal abuse, or if you are not being taken care fed, or given appropriate parental supervision, and if you are under the age of 17.

It's not called divorce. It's called emancipation.
Sure, they can try. They have to give a reason though, and using the excuse "cuz I wanna" isn't going to fly.
I know teenage-life sucks when your familiy is tough on you. But you aren't ready for life on your own. Bills, rent, utilities, working, transportation/gas, etc. The list is neverending and quite frankly it's a scary place. Why do you think colleges have dorms where everything is included in one price?

What you're thinking about is not "divorce" per say. It's legally called "emancipation".
I would advise you that at your age (if you're under 18) you should reconsider this decision several times. Typically they won't award emancipation unless parents are deemed "unfit". Here's a link to read up on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emancipation
I wish you the best of luck,

It is called emancipation from your parents.
The idea is rarely used since most children cannot support themselves without their parents and since it must be proven that the parents are harming the child and interfering with his or her well being.
The most common case of this is when child actors try to escape the dominating stage mother, especially when the parents spend their child's money like water.

i think it's called disowning and you need a lawyer. why do you want to disown your parents? if they're abusive maybe you should call 911 and they'll take you away from them. If you do disown them your parents will probably cut off financial support. therefore, i suggest before making any decision, you should think where or how are you going to support yourself. p.s. no matter how much you want to disown your family, they are still your family and no paper or judgment will say that you aren't otherwise. Just simply leave them. good luck

i think u can in any state but its super hard. I had a friend who tried (in VA but the rules still apply) and she was almost 18 before she even got to the final stages of the legal process! and it costed wayy to much dough, you have to support yourself and get a list of stuff like Health insurance. MOST YOUNG ADULTS dont even have health insurance. it just isnt practical. they try to make it as hard as possible. good luck. before u consider it make sure u have a good job AND good grades.

Yes! I strongly advise you to think about it before you decide to do it. make sure you have a place to go and everything. You have to go to court and get emancipated.
