He saved the country and the world. The whole world was sinking into a fascist nightmare. Those with power & money were out to create a mechanized medieval feudal system. The United States was ripe for it and many people were working to have America join the Nazi's and conquer the world for those able to do so.
That we still had a reasonable election system, is what saved us, and Roosevelt tried many things to re-work the social contract that everybody had a place in it, and that the economy worked for everybody. He made missteps and was not able to fix the deep racism in the country, but he laid the groundwork that allowed the Civil Rights era to happen.
Unfortunately from the beginning he was undermined, and much that could have been done was blocked, and since they have never let up the push to the Fascist nightmare they had planned all along, we very much need his like again.

No. Franklin Roosevelt is a modern socialist that took advantage of the great depression to institute socialist programs under the guise of economic recovery. His public works projects were great in infusing capital into a market severely needing money but the real instrument that brought us out of the depression was WWII. FDR was a charismatic president but he was too socialist to be a great president.

FDR was a great president. He isn't underappreciated, though. I think that most Americans appreciate him. If it weren't for him, the Great Depression would have been much more painful for Americans. Any American who enjoys visiting state parks, fishing in state-owned lakes, sleeping in comfy cabins at those state parks, enjoying art in museums, listening to archival tapes of former slaves' children, appreciating archaeological discovery--any American who enjoys doing those things should thank FDR, because his recovery programs, including the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress Administration brought those cool things to us. He put Americans to work on those projects, and everyone from bass fishermen to history students should appreciate all those things that those people did for America's future.

I should hope not.
He only presided over World War II, which was and will be a seminal event in human history *period*.
It's unfortunate there's actually people in your class who don't know who he is. He is a pivotal figure in American and world history.
He lead and galvanized the United States through a crucial period in world history and held office for four terms, the most of any American president.

He's consistantly ranked among the top 5 presidents, and the only president of the 20th century who is generally regarded as a great president, so I have a hard time saying he's underappreciated

Historians and knowledgable people consider FDR one of the great American presidents.
He managed to control and defeat the great 1929 economic recesion.
In 1939 he was one of few Americans who promptly forsaw the dangers of Hitlerism and Fascism in Europe, when public opinion was totaly unaware and did not realize anything.

i think fdr was a great leader. i lived in the depression times . we had little to eat, and people in the neighborhood would pool their food together, to have a meal. he created work programs, like wpa, ccc, etc. i am 83, so i dont remember everything, but i know he signed the social security bill, started a welfare program, we called it ,, RELIEF then. but he made it possible for us to work and eat. but they were good times, too, you appreciated anything you had. and you ate what was on your plate and were glad to get it. i also served in ww2, and he probably is part of the reason you are not saying heil hitler right now. nuff said
