I have a friend who had a DUI 3 years ago. He is trying to get a job as a truck driver but says he has no luck

He has a CDL and at his last job received awards for safe driving. He is down because people say it takes years to get it off your record. I am trying to help locate work and was wondering if he has any hope?

I do not think so, not working as a driver, most employers want a five-year driving abstract, and it is supposed to be blank.

I got a DUI in 1998 and it was off my record in 2001. Whenever i get my DMV record it only goes back 3 years, but i have heard of these companies that want 5 years back record. I dont know how people get 5 years record when the DMV only gives you the last 3 years. Maybe the DMV is different now and they keep records longer, but i know my DUI was off after 3 years because in Feb of 2002 i went for a job that would not hire you if you had a DUI on your record and even made me and other employees go to the DMV together with some official paper for them to sign saying my record was clean. The DMV signed it so that was that.

If he really wants to be truck driver keep applying, he might be able to get an undesirable shift if an employer is in need. Since he knows the DUI is an issue have him bring it up in an interview. Hopefully he will find a boss that will overlook that. He can take a less desirable shift or route now and in a few years with the DUI off his record he can get a better job.

He will have a hard time because there are millions of drivers out there that don't have a single blemish on their driving record, let alone a DUI(the worst traffic violation known to man). So he will have to find a driving employer who can cut him a break(a close friend) or try to lie and say he never got one(no way with DL# checks). Tell him to suck it up and get a job doing something else. I know that's hard for the truck driving types. If you drive a truck for so long, that's all you're good for.

The reason your friend has such a hard time finding a job is that the employer needs to be able to get him insured, and most insurance companies won't insure someone with a DUI unless there's been 7-10 years between him and the DUI.

The DOT does a pretty extensive background check as far as your driving record goes. I'm not sure how long it will take to get off his record IF EVER. I think it'll be on his record forever.
