There are actually two correct astronomical answers.
First, the vernal equinox is the first day of spring, when the Sun crosses the celestial equator from south to north. That day occurs around March 20 or 21 every year.
Second, the "vernal equinox" is the point in the sky where the Sun is on that day. The vernal equinox acts as the arbitrary zero point for the equatorial co-ordinate system of the celestial sphere, which is how astronomers measure the position of everything in the sky. In that sense, the vernal equinox is sort of like the celestial version of the Prime Meridian on earth.

An equinox in astronomy is the event when the Sun can be observed to be directly above the equator.
Vernal equinox and autumnal equinox. As such the vernal equinox is the equinox where the Sun passes from south to north, and is a zeropoint in some celestial coordinate systems. The name of the other equinox is used less often.

Vernal equinox is around the first day of spring, when the earth's axis tilt is at such a position that every point on the earth's axis is the same distance away from the sun. In other words, they're paralell, but it's tough to say it that way because they're in completely difference planes. The thing is that no side of the earth is closer or further away form te sun

Vernal = spring
Equinox = day on which light and dark are equal - 12 hours of each. These 2 days occur approx 21st March(spring) and 21st Sept ( autumn)
