i accidently kept the answer key to my recent test on my desk, it was hidden though. And I went to grade some tests and noticed it was missing. After my last class of students left, i went to grade the tests and 3 of them scored perfect on it. I think it might have been them, but really have no proof. What do i do about it? Any help please.

You do nothing. You made a mistake and it's not fair to punish the entire class for your error. If some students did cheat, chances are good that they would have added one or two incorrect answers to throw you off. My only suggestion would be to give the test a relatively low weight in terms of their overall grade.

When you address this situation to the class, you have to be very firm and make the consequences clear, so the students will know you won't just blow it off.

Announce to the class that the answer key has been stolen and that you know who took it (even though you don't). Say that you will give the perpetrators a chance to come forward before you decide to ____ (fill in the consequence--make it a good one). Hopefully that will intimidate them into coming forward themselves and you can give them a slightly lesser punishment.

In the mean time, re-administer a different form of the test to all of the students, explaining the situation. Maybe that will be enough of a hassle for the innocent students that they will pressure the guilty party into coming forward.

Give them another test. You can tell your students that the test they were previously given was a practice test, and just give credit/no credit for completing it. You can tell them they all did so well on the practice test, and you are sure they will do the same on the "real" test. Make sure you do not leave your answer keys where they have access to them.
If you think they are looking onto each others tests for answers, you can use manilla folders as "offices" to keep their work private.

Bring them in and give them the test again. If they do not score at least 90%, give them a zero and write them up for cheating.

If they scored 100% on the test once, they should be able to do very well again.

If they admit they cheated before taking the test, offer them a paper due tomorrow on "Cheating" and them no higher than a 70%, after they retake the test.

It was your fault for leaving the answers out on the desk, yeah I Know it was an accident, but try to be more careful next time.
Like You stated you have no proof. I know I would really hate if a teacher tried to accuse me of something that I didn't do.

Make up another test - do not use a regular test from your teacher's manual, actually make the problems up yourself. Keep all the previous grades, since you have NO PROOF, only suspicion. Afterwards, add the two grades together for an average.

I would simply and frankly tell them that I have unintentionally lost the answer key and that the test would not be considered just to avoid any risks of cheating in case it fell in the hands of dishonest students and of unfairly giving undeserved grades to them . however, I would return the graded papers without the grades on them, but with plenty of feedback to all, including a special but not provocative note to the suspect.

I like pmbwhatever's answer. Something else you might consider is confronting the students. Don't tell them you have no proof, but lay out the case. There's a chance, depending on the kids, that they'll cop to it.

what kind of class you have? anyways, you can give them an oral exam. ask them the same question but in different order. if they really did some cheating they wud not be able to answer correctly the same questions. before giving them an oral exam u can tell the class that you answer key is missing and that somebody intentionally took it. you are not pointing finger to anyone but there is a doubt in your mind coz there are three of their classmates who perfects the exam. and to erase that u will give them an oral exam. and determine if they really are suited to be given an hihg scores

Just do nothing! Everyone will cheat at least once in their life. Cheating is normal. Relax and stop worrying about this.
