Say, a family home, with a huge mortgage? have been told that "the mortgage follows the deed". Have also been told that it would be rude to turn down this house, but I have no need of it, and definately don't want the mortgage payments either.

That's not the way it works. You don't get the house with a big mortgage. The executor of the estate will sell the house, pay off the mortgage and put the net proceeds into the estate.

You can't take over a mortgage just because you got the house via a bequest.

check into the market value maybe you can just sell it quickly and make a few bucks at the same time. To answer your question just because someone left you something doesnt mean you have to accept it. GOOD LUCK and let the people telling you it's rude not accept it take over the mortgage payments.

You shouldn't turn it down! The mortgage is probably far less than the value of the home. Hello?! Accept your gift and sell the house! Insta-profit.

No one can think that's rude; that's what most people do who inherit homes or property. Or you might rent it out if that's possible...legally this is your home.

If a family member is distraught by the idea of you selling it, tell them they are welcome to purchase it from you if they think they can afford the mortgage payments.

Sure, you can turn it down. Nothing rude about it! Or ask the executor to sell it and pay over the proceeds if anything is left over.

how about accept it then sell it? Or if that would be more of a hassle than you can refuse it - it will go into probate.
