I am in the same process. First write to local publishers and talk to someone experienced about what to look for, Write to as many as possible but preferably with the type that publish the kind of story you have written, don't loose heart. It takes time I hear

Get a publishing company to go through the manuscript and i bet you, if the company see that it is a good work, they will sponsor the publishing and you can then enter an agreement on what happens to the proceeds that will accrue on the work

You can publish a book whenever you can find an agent to send/take it around and sell it to a publishing house.
In lieu of that, you could also publish it yourself, using a local printer.
What I have always heard is that you need to get an agent. Most companies won't deal with unsolicited material.

One strategy not mention above, is to take the best parts and submit them to literary magazines. There are thousands of magazines like this. As mention "The writer's market" is a good book.
Many great writers test out parts of larger works in this way.
You can also drag the parts around to writing classes or what not if you want.
Perhaps put some parts up for critique on the web.
That may just produce a bunch of garbage thrown at your work, but who knows. Someone might like it.

You must have a literary agent. If you find a literary agent that thinks your book is good enough to be published, the literary agent will submit your book to the appropriate publishers.
To find a Literary Agent, buy a copy of the book The Writer's Market. You can buy it at most large book stores.

Same place adults do -- at publishing companies. It's very difficult to sell a book, though.
Have you shown anybody, gotten any feedback on it?
