It's possible to scratch your cornea and sometimes you have to wear an eye patch, or they could give you a contact eye patch so no one knows you have it.
Also various eye infections, such as pink eye, etc, could force you to wear an eye patch.

I was born cross-eyed. I had to wear eyepatches as a child, alternating eyes based on a schedule by my doctor. Coupled with the use of glasses until I was 14, corrected my vision almost entirely. I am in my mid 20s and I do not even have to use glasses now.

Getting shot in the eye. Some kids with lazy eye need to wear a bandaid over there eye so the lazy eye doesn't get worse.

Scratching your eye with your hook... if you're a pirate.

For non pirates a patch would be used to keep things out of your eye/socket. Otherwise they are used to keep out light or for aesthetic reasons.
