I had the same problem but luckily my big bro is a computer technician! The prob was that I had way too much stuff saved on my laptop. If you have alot of video or music saved you might want to look into getting an external harddrive (their great!). He said it's definitely the most common prob with PC's that freeze and crash.

There are several reasons why your laptop keeps on freezing. One reason could be that the RAM or memory installed in your laptop isn't enough. Another reason could be virus or spyware infection. Either way, you need to identify the problem by process of elimination. First, determine what operating system you're using...Windows XP? Windows Vista? Second, identify your laptop's specifications such as the processor and RAM by consulting the manual included with it...Intel Centrino? AMD Turion? 512 MB DDR? 1 GB DDR2? Then compare your laptop's specifications to the system requirements that your operating system requires or recommends. You can usually find the system requirements by doing a simple Yahoo! search using the keywords "x system requirements" where x is the name of your operating system. If your laptop meets the minimum requirements, then most likely the problem lies with your operating system. In this case, you need to scan your computer for virus or spyware infection. It is best to do the scanning online. Below are Websites you can visit to scan your computer for possible infection:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.bitdefender.com/
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/security_response/index.jsp
If no virus or spyware is detected, then the culprit could be defective parts inside your laptop such as the hard disk. Another likely cause could be damaged system files from your operating system. If this is the case, a replacement or a reinstall should be done. This time, it is best to bring your laptop to a service center and have it fixed by a qualified technician. Or if your laptop's still covered by the warranty period, call tech-support.

This is a biggie for me, im always telling my sister and mom to wait for the hard drive....... If your trying to click on something while the hard drive is being accessed, this is the biggest result of freezes in my experience. On any computer, there is a light that will flash on and off, when it is on, the hard drive is being accessed by the computer, try to let it finish before clicking on anything else. So lets say you just opened the internet, let it open before proceeding and you will most likely stop the freezes..... Also, I would get frustrated and start hitting keys at random out of frustration, this only makes things worse.

try a check disk and a defrag in that order to do them open "My Computer" then right click on the hard drive and click properties when the dialogue box appears click the Tools tab click on the "Check now" button place a tick in the box marked "Automatically fix file system errors" click start xp will say it can't do it some thing has got hold of the hard disk and do you want to schedule a disk check click yes then reboot the check will be done before windows has loaded for defrag go to the same place in my computer and right click as before the click the "Defragment now" button in xp click the "Analyze" button when complete it'll tell you if you need to defrag if so just click the "Defragment" button and leave it for an hour or so until complete

Try to run defrag. Click Start>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>"Rearrange items on your disk to make programs run faster". When the pop-up appears click Defragment.
Next you might try getting a good anti-spyware/adware program to clean possible junk.
The best way to speed your computer is to add memory. Check with the manufacturer to see about adding more RAM.

You most likely have many programs running in the background that you cannot see. This is a guess because you didn't leave specifics such as "only during startup," or "progressively gets worse as I use it." There are many options such as run a good antivirus program and anti apyware. AVG free is a good program.

lol, sounds like my very old 1.4 P4. but yeah umm try cleaning some things out. defragment your C drive by going to your start menu, then go to accessories. Go to system tools and then go to disk defragmenter. see if this works. if not...then keep trying to delete as many things as you can. if your pc is brand new, then i would have no clue why. but if its like my old 7 year old pc without no upgrade, then yeah you might need a new one. but make sure to try and clean out the most thing you can.
