The 318i had 115bhp whereas the 318is had 140bhp
The 318i had a 1.8 litre engine wherreas the 318is had a 1.9 litre engine.
The is came with alloy wheels, electric sunroof and front fog lamps as standard. The 318i could come with these, but they would be optional extras. Its very difficult to tell the difference nowadays without seing paperwork. If the car has been debadged, then the only way other than putting it on a rolling road, would be through a paper trail.

The "S" is for sport package. Usually it means there are Ricarro bucket seats, a front bumper add on, and sometimes a spoiler. I don't believe there are any difference in HP except in the convertibles (which is less). The 1986 and 1987 ES models came with Bilstien suspension and rear posi' traction in addition and were the only models that offered this in a non "M" car.

i have a 318is the diffrence is that the is has more power, spoiler, fog lights, better seats, side skirts, bigger wheels and some have leather seats and aircon. the is sounds better as well. You can also get a better choice of colours if you look around.
