It depends what you're interested in. If malls, there is the biggest at Taipei 101.
For department stores, there are Sogo, Daet Takashimaya, and Shinkong Mitsukoshi. For more fun and cheaper products, go to any one of a half dozen night markets.
Hotels, Depending on the price you want... When I was working, went to the Riviera hotel (Linsen and Mintsu E roads). Now when I'm poorer, I go to KDM Hotel at Chung Hsiao East and Sung Jiang roads and only 1 block from the electronics Quang Hua market district. it runs $60/day.

most popular hotels, I would say Shangri-La Far Eastern and The Grand Hyatt...
Grand Hyatt is located right in the middle of THE shopping area, where Taipei 101 (the tallest building in the world - at the moment) is located, surrounded by shopping malls n department stores (mitsukoshi, etc)... depending on your budget, shopping in this area is more to the upper end, with all the international designer boutiques...
For mid budget, you can go to chongxiao east road... a shopping street with restaurants n shops on both sides of the road...
If you are looking for something hip n trendy, then head to Ximenting area... more to the younger taste, this area offers unique outfits, handbags, shoes at cheap price... nice area to walk around too...

i would say imperial hotel and cosmos hotel it,s nice to stay and the shopping centres are sogo shingkong mitsukoshi and she lin market at night just take MRT to go there

Here in Taiwan you can find all kind of hotels and shopping centers...how much you can afford for living ..... its depend on you ....5stars hotels to ,small hotels( budget hotels) you can live.and for sh oping departmental stores ,,, malls ,,,,,, and even night and morning markets ..........you can buy wat u want......enjoy your stay in Taiwan...... Taiwan is simple and easy country with lovely ppl....... good luck.
