How many teams would want him at more than $5 million - that is the relevant question.
Porter has been slowing down. He still makes tackles but they are usually a couple yds downfield from where he used to make them. He used to break up plays behind the line of scrimage all the time, but no more. And he was due $5 million this year, which is too much to pay a guy with declining skills in the salary cap era. I know people say they should have tried to negotiate him down, but he's been saying that he was going to hold out of training camp unless they negotiated him UP.
The Steelers' mentality is that they can pluck good linebackers off of trees whenever they want. And they usually do.

The Rooneys are doing what they always do, doing what it takes to win. The have let a lot better players than Joey Porter walk in the past and they just keep on winning. To criticize them and say they're wrong is ridiculous. Porter will not be hard to replace as he did not have a good season last year and has a supersized ego and short temper. I think it is for the better of both the team and Porter that he was let go. Go Steelers!

Age & $$$. They can pick up young, talented LB's via the draft at a fraction of the price. I loved Porter & the way he played. but his age will become a liability soon as does the bucks he commands. The Steelers have a habit of releasing players that really seem to be in their prime, but most of these guys are never again the impact players they were with the Steelers. ( Lloyd, Kirkland, Gildon etc.)

He wants top 5 LB money that's why. At age 30, he has reached the point where LBs(see Gildon, Kirkland, Lloyd, Greene, etc.) in a 3-4 start to go downhill . Add in his recent injury problems, PIT's cap situation, and it makes a lot of sense. They just saved five million dollars. That will pay their entire draft class.
I love the Steelers, so I hate to see Peezy go, but life goes on.
P.S. Porter threatened to hold out last year for more cash, but Cowher convinced him not to. Traditionally, holding out has been a great way to get kicked out of Pittsburgh (Hines Ward is an exception).

it's pretty simple, this isn't just a tomlin thing, we should all know by now that the steelers won't pay to keep a player (or coach for that matter) around, they've let go of quality players before, they'll do it again, everyones replaceable, that's just the way the organization looks at it.........i really like porter, but life goes on

Porter is a thug and a huge distraction. He called Kellen Winslow gay and trashes the officials, the team doesnt need league attention on them and he wasnt productive last year. If it was Tomlin he was very smart to do this, but ot was probably management that did this. And no, any team would not love to have him. I guarentee only 3 or 4 teams will be interested.

It's simple. Cut em now, sign em later for much less. Raven are doing the same thing with Lewis.

Apparently this asker knows nothing about running a football team. Its all business. Do some research.
Thank god for parity in the NFL!
