How do you find a good housekeeper / maid / maid service in LA?

I'm looking for a maid/housekeeper to perform simple daily cleaning and do laundry. I've never had a maid before, so how do I go about finding the right fit? I live in Marina Del Rey/Venice CA.
- Is it better to go to a maid service or a private individual?
- Is a background check possible/necessary?

Anything else I should know?

Can anyone offer any real assistance in this matter? I appreciate written sarcasm and bad comedy as much as the next guy, but am looking for a real answer.
