I have an old blacktop driveway. can I just install pavers over top of it or do I have to rip it up?

If your blacktop is in good condition, go for it. Just don't extend your pavers out past the existing surface. Use sand to level the base (blacktop) just like you would over a normal prepared base.

Any problems you have with your current drive will be transferred through the pavers..... Weak edges, rutting, weeds, heaving, etc.

You will still have to tear up some blacktop and do some regular base material prep work so that the pavers will line up with the road, garage, etc.

Remember- pavers are no better than their base.

I don't see why you couldn't. It is a flat level base and that is all the pros do when installing them on dirt. I see the "sand" the pros put around the outer edge of my paves is really concrete - they used sacks of it mixed with water to stabilize the sides while the center area is just sanded.
