Barry hands down. Barry had less seasons, a less talented team, and ran down more stats. It took 10 years to do what Walter Payton did in 13 and what Smith did in 15 years. In 10 years, on one of the most horrific teams during the 90's, Sanders joined Jim Brown as the only players among the NFL's 50 all-time rushing leaders to average 5 yards a carry. Barry is 3rd among 6 rushers that have ran for 2,000 in one season. Emmit has not none of those and he won 3 Super Bowls.
This just a small reason to why Sanders is better than Smith. If you need more reason just ask me.

Based solely on stats, I gotta go Emmitt. That being said, had Barry played with the Cowboys instead of Emmitt this question wouldn't even need to be asked. It would have been Barry in a landslide.

You are talking about two of the greatest running backs to ever compete in the National Football League.

However, I would choose Barry Sanders over Emmitt Smith.

Barry put up remarkable numbers, especially when you consider he played on such a terrible team. I mean it was no secret that he was most of the offense for the Lions.

Smith played on championship teams and had a very good supporting cast of players.

Still, if I was an NFL coach and you told me that I had either one of these guys on my team.... I would be thrilled!

Emmit any day. Unless you like people on your team that will quit when the going gets tough. Almost every season some jerk has to pull a Barry. Last season it was Randy Moss. Heart is probably the most important factor for a football player. On a heart scale of 1-10 Emmit 10....Barry 4. Good day sir!

Barry by a ton. Emmitt had such a good o-line that my fatass could have rushed for at least 750 yds a season.

Barry. He left the NFL in his prime. Had he not gone into early retirement, he would have been the all time leading rusher, not Emmit. And Barry was on sorry teams. He didn't have the O-lines that Emmit had in Dallas.
