Functionalists believe in maintaining the status quo and worry about how change will impact life for a community or broader society. They tend to blame people for the problems that they face.
George W. Bush would be a fundamentalist.

Symbolic Interactionists care about how the individual interprets and perceives what goes on around him or her. Symbolic Interactionists care about labeling, miscommunication between the individual and broader society and any stigmatization, low self-esteem, etc..that is perceived as a result. This fits best with how I think because I'm a social work student and care helping individuals find a sense of happiness with their broader environments.
