On the day that I was conceived, my mother was just one day older than sixteen. All her friends were older, execpt my dad who was one day younger. He had knobbly knees, which my mum found fascinating, and spots all over his face. The day before, she'd got completely sozzled at his party, and that day, both of them were contrite ....

First off, you use the word an before a vowel instead of a.
