The Eternal Return is basically the theory that there is infinite time and a finite number of events, and eventually the events will recur again and again infinitely. Consider the world as a super-complex chess game. If games of chess are played one after another forever, eventually a game will be repeated since there is only a finite number of possible games, it is the same with the world; eventually events will recur in the same order. The world is an eternal process of coming to be and passing away. The process, however, has no beginning or end. Eventually every combination of matter and energy will be realized and repeated and infinite number of times


the reason it is disturbing is because you would live this life over and over and over again. it was one of the major topics in nietzches philosophies.

I don't think that is quite what is being said.

I think the idea is that there are an infinite number of possibilities. Each situation that we are confronted with provides us with choices. Depending on which choice we make we creates a completely different reality for ourselves with a completely different set of outcomes. Give the number of choices the average person makes in a day the number of possibilities are endless, if one considers the number of different possibilities we are confronted with in a lifetime.

Given the random nature of quantum indeterminacy, for all of the universe's processes to recur would take longer than the age of the universe. Once the universe is a trillion years old, things can't recur because the matter of the universe will not be in the same spatial relation with itself. In a trillion years, the universe will be quite dark indeed and the energy contained in the universe will be so dissipated and spread apart that for all means and purposes atomic interaction will cease.

If there is a bigger picture, that is, if our universe is only one of an infinite number of universes, then there is no reason why these infinite universes cannot be distinct from each other. Nietzsche did not have the benefit of quantum theory, and to paraphrase Einstein, in Nietzsche's day, God did not play dice with the universe - the random nature of the subatomic processes had not yet been proven.
