OK I am really going to date myself here. But we only had a phone you dialed and it was a phone line we shared
with someone else. I don't have a cell phone and don't want one. I have to answer phones all day long and and thats the last thing I want to do at night or on the weekends.

Yes, it's becoming more important in today's society to own a phone for emergencies and communicating. Almost no one uses good old fashion mail delivery.

If you mean a land-line phone: I got my first one when I was eleven (but I didn't have my own phone line). If you mean a cellphone: I was an adult when I got my first a cellphone.

if you mean mobile/cell phone then yes, my nine year old daughter has one , she bought it prepaid with her xmas money, and it has been very handy for contacting her when she is out. its also given her some incentive to do jobs for me and other family members for some cash to purchase more credit.
