No, I don't see anything corny with it.

Naming anyone after someone like that will get mocked in school unless your kid happens to be really cool. That's why you'll get replies that their are some celebs with that name and its great. If they were dud's they'd be saying its stupid. So why not do another J.J. name?
I like J.J. alot but couldn't you call him John Jesse or
Jake James * which I really like or Jayden James
I think you get the idea.

Yes, it is. Naming an innocent child after a murderous notorious gunslinger from the old west just doesn't seem right.
Of course, in the 90's there was a professional wrestler who called himself "The Outlaw" Jesse James...
See my point? Come up with something that won't kill the boy when he's a teenager...

It doesn't sound bad at all. Just drop the James when calling him. He'll only be known as Jesse, I hope! Calling him J.J. works too!

Yes! Persuade him to think otherwise. Why would you want to name your child after a historical outlaw or a guy who builds motorcycles? Give your child his own identity instead of tagging him to someone else for life. Imagine other kids laughing and making fun of him because of his name. He won't be able to help it, you as parents should know better.

If your son grows up and decides he no longer wants to be called JJ he'll have a very hard time getting rid of the nickname...

Yes ..........very corny. But who cares if thats what you like then name him that. If he despises then name once he gets older then he will always have JJ as a back up.
