He was also very good in the spring and summer and made it to the travel team. What should he do?

I'm an ex div 1-a college player. It sounds like if he already trained he might want to take about 3 or 4 days off to let his arm reat but in that amount of time he wont lont lose any velocity and more that likely his accuracy will be better and every aspect of his game will sharper. I know from 28 years of experience, It sounds like that whats he needs. If this happens mid season(and it does) he has to play through it and when the soreness goes away by playing thru it his arm will improve greatly. Just make him get that rest before the tryouts. I have also coached state champ teams in little league and junior high. I hope this helps, it should. Good luck!!

It's mental.

If he was good before and now is having problems, it's because he is putting too much pressure on himself ahead of tryouts. He needs to sharpen his focus and gain confidence by setting attainable goals.

1) Start by hitting something large like a basketball (don't swing too hard because of wrist injury). Just make technically sound swings and try to direct the ball to different locations on the field.
After a few swings, move to a softball. Alternate between grounders, line drives and deep flies. Then move to a baseball. Get the feeling of swinging correctly and feeling where you want the ball to go. Finally, sharpen your focus by hitting whiffle golf balls.

2) Throwing: Start by playing catch close in. Feel the weight transfer, the arm lag and the release. Move further back and try to throw directly to the opposite person's chest. Make sure that you grip the ball correctly with each throw (fingers perpendicular to the seams); try to gauge the natural curve of your throw (usually a tail to the right for a right-hander) and make the ball move directly to the other person's chest. Finally, place a very small object about chest high on the backstop. Practice fielding flies and grounders and firing directly into the object.

im 15 and that happened to me last summer. last summer was my worst season in fielding. i kept practicing with my friends over the winter and built more arm strength with my trainer. my arm feels great and now i can thorw my best accuracy. there are two things that could be affecting him, one of them is that he could have an injury, and second(which probably is the problem) its all in the mind. tell him to clear off his mind and have a catch with someone, dont think about throwing. when you start, throw the ball back and forth at like 20 ft apart and then after 5-10 throws start taking small steps backwards everytime after you catch the ball. worked for me

If he is only 16 or so(I'm assuming this age since you said School)I don't see how his arm can get worse unless he has some diseas .But if that it happening.... first make sure his arm is ok and that it's not hurting. If you deny the pain it will only get worse. If there is nothing wrong after that practice a little bit more and see if he somehow improved. If it hasn't he will have to try out with that arm trouble and hope he makes it and can figure out whats wrong with it.The only other possibility I can see is maybe the cold weather has hurt it arm somehow.Never happened to me but I guess it is possible.
