Sounds like either a fraternal or religious medallion to me.

It does sound more like a religious medal than anything else. Coins as well as tokens usually have an expressed value, even if that value is "no cash value". Sounds like an item for a sailor. If there is writing on it, or more than just what you stated, then that would help in finding out just what it is. As for now, it is a sailor religious medal.
