If you saw his press conference on the tube, you probably saw him get choked up and shed some tears....but then he gained his composure. I don't know the full story as to why he was traded. Too bad for Edmonton.

Why would you think otherwise? This guy bleeds Edmonton Oilers blue, has ever since he was a kid growing up in Edmonton, was given the chance of a lifetime to play pro for his hometown team, and has been the heart and soul of that team since he was drafted twelve years ago. So, you can understand the emotional devastation this man must have felt after being told he was going to have to leave the only place he had really ever called home and play for some other team. If I was in that same situation, I would probably cry to. I think I should also refer you to the same type of situation when Wayne Gretzky was traded to Los Angeles from Edmonton in the summer of 1988, when he held a press conference and, even though he apparently told Mark Messier he wasn't going to, he shed tears because that was the only place that he called home during his professional career. My question would be how would you react if you had to leave your friends and a lot of the people you love because your boss has moved you to a different branch in your company in another country, and you weren't getting a higher job position but were keeping the same one? You would probably be somewhat emotional. So why should he not be allowed to be emotional and not have people question him about the authenticity of his emotions? The reason he gained him composure is easy to say. He needs to be professional about this, and also optomistic about joining another team that probably has a better chance of making the playoffs. But, he needs not to apologize to anybody for reacting the way he did to the situation.

As an Islander fan; I think they would make the playoffs without Smyth, but having him is huge. I am listening to the game against STL and he already has 1 assist in his 1st game. I also dont feel he will be back in Edmonton, not because he wouldnt want to, but the Islanders are smart enough to try and sign him and Blake for the future. I dont think they would give up what they did to get him if they werent going to sign him.

Now as for the tears, I do believe they were real, he is one of the most passionate players in the game and the Islanders will benefit greatly.

Oh and players want to come to the "Fish Sticks" now, they arent the same team from years ago and I hated that logo too, always made me hungry lol.

The Oilers' preliminary settlement grant to Smyth replace into in all probability that low on purpose, in simple terms to get the ball rolling on negotiations. they prefer him good now, he's a lot extra effective to the group than Darcy Tucker may well be (see the above comments on Tucker), and that i think of that Smyth particularly needs to stay in Edmonton. they are going to detect a thank you to maintain him. God, i'm hoping they don't commerce for Tucker.

I think every body who had a chance to know this player would never have a doubt about his tears real or not.All this years he was a heart and soul of that team, but the Oilers've been same for him,so I'm more than sure, that if he would be able to stay and sign a new contract,he'd certainly do that. But agents and GMs have commercialized the game so much, that players are just toy solders and this is a big shame.

Yes, I would cry too if I was traded to the Fishsticks. He was traded because the Oilers and he could not come to a contract agreement, so the Oilers probably would've lost him in the off season anyway, this way if he's traded, the Oilers get something in return.

Don't worry Oiler fans, I think he'll re-sign with the Oil in the off season.

if edmonton meant that much to the man you think one hundred thousand dollars a year wouldn't mean that much to him he wanted 5.5 million the oilers offered 5.4 million a year so you tell me, you think he thought he was an untouchable they traded gretzky what makes him different oh yea greed. for symth the oilers got basicly 4 first round draft picks the youngs guys they trded to get him where the islanders last 2 first round picks plus 2 more

oh yeah totally.....Edmonton traded away the man they call "Captain Canada" to an island (Long Island).

The Isles need him for the playoffs, but after the season, he'll get back to Edmonton..no doubt.

I don't think it had anything to do with WHERE he was traded ... it was the fact that he was traded, period. He's played in Edmonton for 12 years.

12 years is a long time to be an Oiler. He did so much for this city. I honestly believe that he didn't expect this to happen
