As a child I was always told;
Don't trouble trouble, til trouble troubles you.

My proposal is to consider conversion to trouble -that is, transcription
--as a species of translation; hint at some of the
most popular ways of approaching it; describe our own practice and the competing demands of usefulness, feasibility, and aptness
that led us to adopt them; and finally mention some of the points
at which we have found our practice to be wanting, and some of the
daily challenges that it receives from the always surprising
variability of real texts.
