what do people think of American idol?

i think people who audition for american idols are a sell out, but what do people think?

It is the same thing as the music industry. One big joke, but you know what, the reason the music industry is a joke is because people listen and buy bad music. Now people just watch bad music on TV and they call it American Idol. I watched the show for a year and a half, getting mad on a weekly basis. I finally realized the public has no idea what makes a good artist and I quit watching. I realized that is the same reason I quit listening to mainstream radio stations over a decade ago. I realize that some stuff is good on the radio and very rarely on American Idol, but you have to put up with so much bad stuff to hear a little good stuff.

Obviously a lot more people watch this than the ones who don't or won't admit it. Sure, sometimes it's kinda like a train wreck that you can't help watching anyway. But the numbers don't lie, and some of them are selling a lot of CD's that no one heard of before AI. Is it overdone and manipulated? Sure, it's all about ratings, but we don't have to take it seriously do we?
Lighten up.
If you knew you could become a major recording artist within a few months if you subjected yourself to the process, you might consider it. Of course you could always remain true to your art and play in backroom taverns or county fairs the rest of your career also.

If you have talent, then AI is just a huge audition. Saying that they are contestants is wrong. How are they different than any other artist.

Ok, so a normal artist has to audition to get the job. Then, they gain popularity through their musical abilities, until they acquire a music contract and america loves them.

Now AI, an artist audition to get on to AI. Then, the gain popularity through their musical abilities, until they can acquire a music contract through gaining enough popularity from Americans.

Are they really that different?

i have never seen the show and don't care to start. i'm not even sure i would watch if i knew someone was scheduled to appear. as far as being a sell out, it depends on your view of that comment.

i understand this show to be a chance for your average joe (did i just name a reality show?) to be able to get exposure, compete, and possibly break into the music business (just a guess). this vehicle wasn't around in the seventies or eighties where you needed luck for that big break to get into the recording industry. thanks to fox, we get to see the next big music talent before they get the big contract. if i wanted a talent show, i would just go to the local church or elementary school or even karaoke bar. this kind of entertainment doesn't appeal to me. but it obviously does to others. i think the contestants are just taking a chance at pursuing a dream of being a great singer (puke). if anything, fox is the sellout as this wreck has spread to other genres on other channels (there's a country one, but i can't recall the name)

I think that people who audition are looking for an opportunity! It's the producers that only want to use and abuse them in any way they can. They don't at all care for the contestants, just their tv market share. They will do anything without regard to contestants feelings, pride, ambitions, etc. BOOOO to all the judges too!!

I like watching the show, but the people that win can't really be called a "celebrity" because they were a "contestant" on a tv show instead of making themselves.

Ok, 1st of all, no one on AI is a sell out. The entire SHOW is one big sell out.

AI is such a huge acceptance of musical mediocrity, it's scary.

No one has broken new ground in rock/pop since grunge. So what're we doing? *Voting* for our new 'heros" on tv. It's freakin sad.

It's stupid ... I can't believe how many people admit to watching it ... a revamped version of Ed McMahon's "Star Search", which also SUCKED.

Singers, not musicians ... not song-writers ... just hacks who saw Kelly Clarkson make it big and think, "Hmmm, I can do THAT - Amerikkka will LOVE ME!"
