Not as weird as calling your kid Apple.

Or Gaylord Focker for that matter.

On a serious note, Its not the greatest name, but it certainly isn't the worst name out there. For me, names like Elizabeth, Allison, Katie, Jessica, Anntionette, Amanda, Ashley, Chloe, Phoebe, Katie, etc... are great names. I feel that when i have a kid, i will choose one of those names (if my wife says its OK of course), because eventhough People may call them Generic, they're considered "generic" for a reason; They are very good, popular names that people like. I dont want my kid hating his/her name just because i felt like being creative. And i certainly dont want him/her to be ridiculed for it.

REMEMBER, this is a name a Real Person will have to live with (although it could be legally changed)....

Unique names should not be a goal. A name should MEAN something, should roll off the tongue with ease, should SOUND pleasant. Nothing worse than saddling a child with a name they'll hate. Holland is fine (I had a friend in high school named Holland, we called her Holly) ... but you should consider how the name will appear on a job application.

Holland Caprica isn't all THAT weird - I've seen FAR, FAR stranger names. I had a friend who legally changed his name because he couldn't tolerate it.

Caprica .... It sounds harsh and looks like a cross between Caprice and Paprika. Could be your sister is creating a stubborn child with a hot temper that grows up wondering why her mama named her after a pulp sci-fi planet.

Caprice: From Italian "capriccio" which originally referred to a feeling of horror causing the hair to stand on its ends (in Italian "capo riccio", meaning "hedgehog head"). The word later became associated with Italian "capra", referring to the stubborness of the goat.

If she likes place names, I like Holland a lot beer than Brooklyn, it's actually kind of cute. I am not too sure of Caprica though... Congrats on the new niece!

Everyone is saying Holli but you could also call her Lanie, Lannie, Anne or Annie.

Holland is cool and I agree it will shortened to Holly or dressed up to Hollywood.

The Caprica is awkward. I also look at what other names children would be able to 'tease' about. Caprica is FULL of tease-able names.

A single syllable middle name will make it easier to roll of the tongue.

WOW! I've never heard that one! Holland is a pretty and interesting name - but not weird. Caprica however does sound a little weird. But I like her taste in names. I would be curious to know what other baby names she has in mind. Can you share?

I think it's a weird name, yes, but I like it. There's an actress, Holland Taylor, so the name has been used before, and I think it sounds nice. I could see a child going by "Holly" and an older woman going by "Holland."

I like Holland, but am not sure about Caprica. It makes me think of those gross Capri Sun Drinks. It is unique though.

I don't think it is that weird. The weird names are when people take traditional names and change the spelling drastically. Those kids have names that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. I actually like the name Holland. Especially with the correct spelling. : )

i love the name holland and plan to use it as a middle name in the future when i have kids. it reminds me of my favorite place camp seven hills in holland new york. her nicknames could be hollie, holly, or just hol. i'm not too keen on Caprica though. i think caprice is good alternative.

Its ridiculous - Caprica? Is she trying to name the child after a type of pants or a car or maybe she wanted to use Paprika but held back a little - ugh
