Anybody know how bad the tornadoes get around here (Augusta GA)? I've heard that they're not very big and I'll be okay, but I live in some pathetic apartments. And I have to go see my husband on the Army post, but I'm nervous about driving because I heard there's been tornadoes around the US today (Alabama, Missouri, Kansas...) and I heard that I'm in the "Severe Tornado Warning" forecast area.

Help???

Yeah. I've been here through at least 25 tornado advisories, and never seen a twister, but they still catch me off guard. This one seemed a bit more serious than the others.

Your worst tornadoes are smaller than the worst ones in TX and OK.

Close your shutters and use Duct Tape on the inside of the windows in an X pattern. Getting acrylic windows better. Your shutters should be STRONG.

Stay away from even prepared windows during any tornado. Get deep inside the building somewhere.

Tornadoes can accompany hurricanes, even the remnants of those hitting further south, like Katrina. You can get tornadoes at night during such events.

A Weather Radio that keeps you apprised of warnings is useful. Be sure to turn off heating appliances, stoves. First thing to do in event of damages is turn off the gas.

As for your house and home in the future, see Nuntiak's Weather Blog. Lots of weather vs housing info.

In the bottom of the Blog Roll, scroll way down left margin from Blog page, there is a satellite view in near real time for entire SE USA area where you can watch things like hurricanes approaching and see who is most likely to get hit, how big it is, and the like:

i used to live in athens, ga and am from macon, ga. there are tornadoes there occansionally. no tornado is safe. if they say their is a warning, that means conditions are favorable for one. if they say their is a tornado watch in your area, that means they have actually seen one and it has touched down.
don't worry to much, i lived in ga for 21 years and only went through one. they happen but not as frequently as they do in the midwest.
