Predicting the future is always a hard thing to do. Have you ever seen some of those old science fair exhibits with titles like "The World of Tomorrow" and noticed just how out of place things look now? Seeing something out of place for its time is called an anachronism, and old predictions are amost always wrong and amost always become tomorrow's anachronisms. For example, many peope in 1969, after seeing the success of the Apollo program, predicted we would be on Mars by now. The movie '2001: A Space Odyssey' even showed people going to the farthest reaches of our solar system- in 2001, which was six years ago now!

In any case, some things we're pretty sure we will have in the future. We know that as the population of the Earth climbs ever higher, more and more problems arise, relating to living space, food supply, disease, energy, and global stability. All of these problems will require solutions. We may not have a solution in the next twenty or so years, but new ways of addressing these problems will probably be introduced.

For example, we know that oil is running out, and the increased demands both from population growth and the emergence of economies like China and India wil mean high prices. These high prices will make alternatives that are now too pricey more reasonable. We are likely to see the emergence of better electrical hybrids that weigh less and give more power output. Hydrogen fuel cell cars may not yet become a reality for most, but working highway models will likely become more prevalent. Hydrogen fuel cells convert energy from hydrogen and oxygen, and do not pollute. The sources of that hydrogen may initialy be coal and oil-burning facilities, but we hope that the use of wind, solar, geothermal, and even clean nuclear energy (it is possible) will provide clean sources of hydrogen.

Technologically, we are likely to see even faster microprocessors, making home computers faster and better able to handle millions, even billions, of operations per second. We will probably see specialized technology in a whole host of hardware platforms, even possibly tiny pin-sized computers in everyday gadgets. Scientists will come closer to realizing "artificial intelligence", and many everyday appliances will have "brains". This will allow you to simply tell your appliances how you want things done. We might not have a "Rosey" from the Jetsons just yet, but we're getting closer to it.

TVs, VCRs, and all sorts of media types will have nicer features, many of which will be interactive. Internet TV will probably become a reality (technically it exists today, but it is slow, poor quality, and limited). We'll be able to customize all of our TV programs to what we want, and we will be able to summon all sorts of information about the programs we are watching (not just the date and time a movie is playing). Imagine simply asking the TV "Tell me more about that actor?" and the TV talking back to you. Scary? Perhaps, but you can aways customize the features.

With a global population likely nearing 10 billion, science will have to rapidly adjust to the demands of nutrition, health management, and housing. The Third World will likely not see advancement on those fronts to where we are today- and, in fact, problems might advance faster than their solutions. We hope that no global epidemic will ravage the world's populations. Bird flu, for example, is not yet dangerous enough that it poses a problem of pandemic proportions. Science may yet out-wit these bugs, but if a new one comes around the corner, there is little science can do in the short term. Cancer mortality is likely to fall even further, with better detection of cancers helping prevent many cancers that are now seemingly incurable.

The US will continue to dominate as the world's largest producer of farm staples, becoming even more productive. This will help feed a growing US and world population.

The twin problems of health management and aging will hopefully force politicians to address the need for universal healthcare and a Social Security System that remains solvent. We're not likely to see major jumps, such as universal healthcare or privatized Social Security, but we will see more incentives. For example, taxpayers will receive more tax incentives for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Prevention will become a key aspect of relieving some of the enormous increases in the price of healthcare. Politicians will also work on medical malpractice reform, which is one major contributor to today's prices. Social Security is likely to move towards privatization, but not fully.

We hope (but are not likely) to see a safer and pleasanter tomorrow globally. Worries such as global terror will continue to be at the forefront of the global agenda. However, more and more countries will work together on this issue, realizing that terrorism is not just a local problem.

And finally, 'Law and Order' and 'CSI' will probably still be around. =)

Just use your imagination!! No one knows what the world will be like in twenty years, so just make it up and go with it.

Here are some ideas you can write about:
-Talk about what your parents might be like in twenty years, being twenty years older. Would they be retired? Moved?
-If you have siblings talk about them. What jobs would they have? Would they have children by then and/or be married?
-What will cars be like? Imagine a newer car, maybe one that runs on something strange, like potatoe peels or something more ecological.
-Think about how our environment may look like? This you could go to a couple of websites to get some clues as to what the world is like as far as temperatures and etc.

Good luck!

You're not gonna find a website that will tell you what the world is gonna be like 20 years from now. Just use your imagination, there's not a wrong answer.
