We just pulled tongue & groove cedar, that was glued to painted drywall, off and the walls are damaged where the glue was. There is a lot to repair, lots of spots with paint & texture gone, some spots where drywall is showing, Paper is peeling. Do I have to fill each damaged spot with some kind of filler before I use venetian plaster? Or can I just fill these spots with the venetian plaster?

Even though the Venetian Plaster technique will add texture, these types of projects always come out better when you are working with a smooth, primed surface.

With that said, some minor wear should not show through on the plaster. Remember, it is always best to do multiple thin coats than one or two thick coats (I would follow this rule for paint or the plaster technique.)

IMO, I would repair the worst parts of the wall and fill in any major spots. I would also sand the wall so that there is less of a difference where the paper is peeling. Then prime & plaster.
