The wall board gypsum is the same as bagged gypsum, except that it is not powdered. However, gypsum only improves soils that are sodic- high sodium content. Most garden soils are not sodic. It can add calcium, but unless your soil is deficient in calcium, adding more will not improve growth. Since gypsum does not affect soil pH, it will have no effect on weeds or the acidity of your soil.

In order to benefit your soil, it has to be ground up to a powder. Gypsum will help break up clay soil and it does so electrolytically, so the finer the grains of gypsum, the better.

Gypsum also provides sulfur and calcium to soil. They are minor plant nutrients and you don't need (in most soils) a tremendous amount of them.

You can do it, but I think you're in for a lot of work. Maybe just go to a garden center and buy a bag of it. It costs less than $10 for a 50 lb. bag.

Laying sheets of wallboard in your garden looks bad, too.

YES! I have done it. Works great and helps keep weeds to a minimum as well. Of course, you need to make sure you don't unbalance the soil. So, every spring check your soil with a test kit.
