Actually, the DS Lite does not have a light off function, only 4 levels of brightness. The previous answerer must have gotten the old DS mixed up.

In my experience, the DS Lite has a battery life on red light at 15 Min max (with button pressing, touch screen usage and 3D graphics running, an example is Mario kart.) and brightness level set at 1 (the lowest). With a game that is purely touchscreen, 2D oriented (like Warioware, Brain Age), there is a max red light life of 20-25 min, brightness level at 1 (lowest). You will minus 1-2 min for brightness level 2, minus 3-4 min for brightness level 3, and minus 6-9 min for the highest brightness level (4).

I've done Advance wars DS, which I used both button and touch screen for about 20 min before I decided I don't want it dying on me (brightness level 1). And, I won't forget about GBA gaming. Using my above description, GBA gameplay on the DS lite, brightness level 1 with red light on is 16 min tops, as GBA gaming is button and d-pad oriented.

No one here but that Jagdg answered this question properly. I wonder if any of them read the question...

I agree with Jag, the brightness levels on the DS Lite play a major role in battery life when the red light comes on.

when a battery is fully charged, it has a green light.

when it holds only half of a charge, it has an orange light

when it holds only a quarter (1/4) of the maximum capacity, the light turns red

if a full charge holds roughly 14 hours, the light turns red when there is two and a half hours left, but it depends on your gaming habits. (such as how often you use sleep mode, and the brightness level, which i always keep on the lowest setting)

regardless, when it turns red, save, and charge. my own experience has had the system turn off after an hour and 48 minutes of being red lighted

probably 30 min.. and if you want it to stay longer, turn your DS Lite off, then turn it back on and turn off the light. (bottom left corner of main menu)
