We originally bought the Diaper Dekor when we first had our daughter. We liked that it was "hands-free" - it just had a lever at the bottom that you stepped on to open up the top lid, then you dropped the diaper and it went through a plastic door into the chamber. It also kept the diapers mostly sealed away, and you just pulled out the full diaper bag, cut it and retied the bottom for a new bag.
BUT it used special bagging that cost $20 a box (lasted about 3 months then), and once she was eating more solids, the smell just couldn't be contained, no matter what. Also, she started to open up the lid herself and put her hands down through the flaps - eww.
So we ended up buying a Diaper Champ to replace it. It was much better at keeping the smells in, she couldn't access the inside area, and it's still easy to operate. You just put the diaper in the top and flip the handle from one side to the other. It uses regular trash bags.
She's now a toddler and the poop just gets to be too stinky for any diaper pail at that age, so we throw the poopy diapers into a plastic grocery bag, tie it and throw it out in the garbage can in the garage. I doubt there are any diaper pails that will keep in the poop smell once a child gets past 18 months or so.
It scored 4 out of 5 stars on Target.com:

You're right, there will always be bad reviews about a given product. You basically just have to pick which one you think will work best for you. We did that and have had the Diaper Champ for 1 1/2 years and have been very happy with it.

Honestly, it doesn't matter. I have the Diaper Champ. A good friend of mine has the Diaper Dekor. And I used to regularly sit for a family that used the Diaper Genie. They all work fine in the beginning, but as the baby gets older, starts eating more food, the diapers get stinkier and nothing works. Now my diaper pail reeks. I only use it for wet diapers now and take the others out to the trash immediately. The diaper champ is the only one you won't have to spend an additional fortune on buying refill bags, but get her something else. I'm sure she'll end up getting one anyway if she's having a baby shower; and you'll be happier to know you actually bought her something more useful. What do I wish more people would have bought me for my shower? Clothes in bigger sizes than 0-3 or 3-6 (but make sure they are seasonally appropriate!!); or even better - a gift for mom instead of baby - like a gift certificate for a prenatal massage or a pedicure. Boy that would have been awesome!

The diaper genie is actualy amazin, although my son's room is very tiny and we keep the door closed, there is no odor at all (and trust me, his diapers smell really badly and I usually empty the diaper pail once a week} !!! THe only problem is, that we have diaper genie II., and it is hard to get those special trashbags in grocery or drug store, they usually have bags for the regular diaper genie. But I really recomend it, I used to be a nanny and I know pretty much all the diaper pail, and this is the only one that doesn't stink!

I had the Diaper Champ and I loved it. You didn't have to buy those special bags to put it in just a garbage bag which I liked the best. I heard alot of bad things about the Diaper Genie. It is your choice you do what you want though. I hope this helps. Good Luck!!!

Do not get the diaper genie. It sucks. When you open that cover it stinks so bad. We got the diaper champ from target. It's great. You put the diaper in the top and turn the handle and it goes in the bag. You don't have to buy special bags any plastic bag will do.

I just bought a Diaper pail from Cosco it was only about $9.00, it uses regular small trash bags, it has a lid and has a spot where an air freshner can go if needed. Since I am buying everything myself.. I just did not see the point to pay 20+ bucks for a trash can that uses special bags that are not all that cheap. That is only my opinion.. good luck.

i had the diaper genie. it gets full real quick, so i dont enen use mine now, i feel it was such a waste of money. however they do keep the smell down to a min. if you can find a diaper pail that is bigger than the diaper genie then i would get her that, or get her something she could really use. you cant go wrong with lots of diapers.

How'bout another gift suggestion.....
If the baby is already born or the name and sex are known: an embroidered baby blanket with the baby's name/birthdate/weight etc. It's totally suiting of what a "best friend's" gift would be. I've given several in the past and they are ALWAYS the center of attention at gift opening time :)
Another great idea is something for MOM, like a gift certificate for a spa service, cleaning service/post-partum service.
Also, speaking from experience, take your friend lots of prepared meals after the birth and do her dishes/laundry when your there. Don't be shy even is she tries to tell you not to worry about it. TRUST ME, she'll adore your offer :)

Well basically what you're talking about here is a bucket of feces in a babies room ...in whatever form you happen to buy it...so frankly in my opinion...it should be emptied everyday anyway...so it doesn't really matter what you get.
I just got the Target special for 14 bucks and I line it with deodorized bags and it doesn't get left in the nursery long enough to get smelly...so to hell with the diaper genies...they're a pain.
The simpler the better.
Someone else mentioned baby meds...I agree that is a great gife...at toys r us and babies are us they sell this baby relief kit with everything you need...MUCH better than a poo bucket. :)
